The girl’s wrestling team now will get their own team instead of having two separate teams! This is the first year they have done this in the middle school leagues. Our athletic director, Mr. Chesmore said “This has been pushed for two to three years”. Other high schools have two separate teams and KHSAA wanted it to go to middle schools too.
Logan Herrman, 8th grade girls wrestler, said, “I love that there are two teams. I love the idea that girls will be wrestling girls and boys will wrestle boys, and I’m glad to see so many girls showing interest in wrestling.”
Jordan Short, The girl’s wrestling coach said “I am excited for girls to have their own season separate from boys’ season. It should mean more girls will participate in wrestling.” Coach Short said, “ I am in my 9th year of coaching wrestling either as an assistant or head coach.” Mr. Short said, “I coach wrestling because it is my favorite sport. I have done it for a long time, so I want to pass on my passion and knowledge of the sport to others.”
Since there are two separate teams now, lots of girls are more interested in girls wrestling. Wrestling is unique because it was created in the early 1800s which means it is the oldest sport that we know of. According to Margherita AJ, “ Strength and endurance is paramount to successful performance. The wrestler needs to have not only strength and endurance but also technical skills to be successful. Weight control and weight loss distinguish it from most other sports at the high school and collegiate levels.” It is a very competitive sport and great to watch!
