WRMS boys spring tennis season has officially started. The tennis team only takes around 20 people, which is split between JV and Varsity. Once you make the team, practices are every week from 3:00 – 4:15. Coach Garland, the head coach of the boys tennis says “ Everyday practice has warmups, we have later drills, and then we play against each other. We also do a lot of individual drills and group drills. Then we usually round it off with some competition fun drills.” Tennis can be played as doubles which is two players using teamwork and collaboration to win against the other team, or singles which is when there’s a single player on each side of the court competing head-to-head. 8th Grader, Braiden Joost, has participated in tennis the past two years at WRMS, and has played since he was 3. He prefers doubles because he doesn’t have a lot of stamina.
Tennis is an all age sport that you can play at any time for as long as you want to help you stay in shape. 8th grader,
Carson O’connor, said “I joined tennis because I wanted to stay active, but I don’t see myself playing in the future because I want to play baseball instead.” In college Garland played tennis at Emporia State. His first year coaching tennis at WRMS was in 2015. Before that, he coached at Shawnee Heights HS back in 1998 (his first year of teaching). Garland said, “This is my 9th year teaching tennis at WRMS, 14 years in total if you count other schools I’ve coached at.” Garland suggests tennis as a sport for all ages. “Not only is tennis a great lifetime activity, but we have a lot of fun playing and competing against each other.”
