Many students at WRMS love their drinks, whether it’s energy drinks, coffee, or just plain old water. The only problem with this is the school has decided to ban “open lid” drinks.
The student hand book says “Drinks must be in a spill-proof container”. 8th grade principal Mr. Dial said there are too many open lid drinks coming into the school. Dial said, “It truly is the amount of drinks that are coming into the school and spills/trash that is left behind. We also wanted to limit the number of energy drinks in cans that were being consumed throughout the day.”
While open drinks are banned from students in the hallways and classrooms, the cafeteria is still selling open drinks, such as the milk cartons and the pineapple juice in a can. If students can show responsibility in a confined area, why can’t students be permitted to show they can be responsible with open drinks in classrooms and hallways?
When students bring a Stanley with a straw they are still able to spill that drink and make a mess and yet they are still allowed to bring them. This is inconsistent with the rules of the student handbook. If the school allows Stanley cups, why can’t other drinks with lids and straws be permitted?
7th grade All Star teacher Mrs. Estenson said her students have done a great job of following this rule. She said “My students have done a great job of following the policy. I never have to get on them about trying to bring in different beverages”.
8th grader Avery Rose said she would change this policy if she could. “ I would change it by just letting students bring open drinks.”
The drink policy is a rule that the students of WRMS do follow. The reason the school has added this rule is the fact so many drinks were spilled last year and years before. The students have adjusted to this rule by putting drinks in spill proof containers. We feel since the students are showing responsibility with this new policy, we should be given another chance with open lid drinks.
