The use of wireless headphones at WRMS has become a pressing issue with students and faculty, many who think the policy is unfair. The policy states that you cannot wear wireless headphones during school hours, not even at lunch or when your teachers allow you to.
Wireless headphones do nothing but help, many students use wireless headphones to help them focus on the assignment that they are doing and to tune out the noise. Wireless headphones can be connected to Chromebooks, so there should be no issues with phones in class. 7th grade student Tucker Ennis stated, “…The wires don’t get in your way while you’re working”. Most students believe it is easier to just have wireless headphones, they are easier to use and they don’t get in the way while working.
The rule is completely unnecessary for the school and only acts as another roadblock for students trying to block out the sound of a noisy classroom. 8th grader Ahmad Abu-Hijleh completely disagrees with the policy, he mentioned “Most of them (students) don’t really have wired headphones, most of them have wireless headphones, that’s just what’s preferred…”. Students want to have the freedom to listen to music when they are working, but because of the policy, a lot of kids can’t listen to music. Some teachers offer wired headphones to students, but that comes out of their pockets, not the schools. So the wireless headphone policy takes money out of the teachers pockets, and the kids pockets.
Although a large percentage of our student body believes that the policy is completely unwarranted and unfair, many faculty members remain dead set on the idea that wired headphones are a disturbance to the workflow, and pose a threat to the education and security of the students of WRMS, Mr. Haire said “I think teachers get a lot more time back in the classroom not fighting kids… to not have those negative interactions back and forth”. Some teachers don’t exactly agree with this point though, Ms. Mcdonald said “The students knew when it was appropriate to use them, (wireless headphones) and when it was not”. This statement proves that Mr. Haire’s point is completely invalid.
Mr. Dial stated that he believed that it’s just about the consistency of not allowing phones, therefore not allowing wireless headphones, he stated, “I think it’s just consistency”. However this doesn’t make any sense. We are allowed to have our phones at lunch, in turn, we should most definitely be allowed to use our wireless headphones at lunch.
The wireless headphone policy is completely unfair and does not boost the education of any WRMS students, all it does is pose another challenge for the student body.
