Holiday break is right around the corner for WRMS students and staff. Everyone has been working hard this school year, and is ready for some much needed time off. However, is a holiday break long enough to spend time with family and rest during the holiday season? We think there could be benefits to having an extended holiday break.
Dr. Mcwilliams, Superintendent of Auburn Washburn, said that they do the best they can to give students two weeks off for winter break. “As far as determining the dates, that decision is influenced by the day of the week Christmas falls. This year, for example, Christmas falls on a Wednesday so it made sense for the second quarter to end on the Friday before.”
Students and Faculty/Staff were surveyed and had a total of 240 responses. 57.1% of people at WRMS voted to start a week later in August, end a week later in May, but get a four week long winter break. 42.9% voted to keep start and end dates the same, but only get two weeks for winter break. This shows that more than half of the people who voted, want a longer break.
Eighth grader Carly Lafond says that our break should be at least a week longer. “I feel like our Christmas break should be like a week longer than it already is’ cause I feel like that’s a good amount of time.” Lafond says she would want to use her extra time to go somewhere tropical for a month.
Seventh grader Jadon Langat says that if he could change the length of winter break he would, “I would maybe change it to like 3 weeks”. Langat also said if we got a longer break, we would be more prepared to return to school.“We can recharge our brains and then come back ready to learn.”
The length of winter break would be beneficial to students and staff if it was extended. We believe that this is true because they would get to spend more time with family for the holidays. Instead of coming back tired from winter break because there was not enough time, with an extended break we could come back ready to learn and well rested.
