The WRMS WAVE team has committed to adopting a family as a team project. They are working through the United Way Christmas Bureau. The WAVE team has been organizing and sponsoring the Adopted Family for over 2 decades. They spend two weeks collecting money through the “Penny Wars”. Mrs. Salvatore is one of the WAVE team teachers organizing the project. She said, “Each year when we do this project families are so grateful and appreciative for the support we provide. We always choose a family with 4-6 children.”
Students may also participate in this project voluntarily by donating money, purchasing, gifts, gift cards, and canned food. 8th grade WAVE team student Caidin Strathmann said, “I think it is important to contribute to this project because kids and other people should get the chance to have a good time and merry Christmas.”
The WAVE team teachers will also select a group of students to help wrap gifts and deliver them to the family. Salvatore said, “ It is our hope that students will participate in this worthwhile cause as it benefits them to contribute to their community and give to a service project that encourages acts of kindness and generosity.”
For the WAVE team, just knowing they are providing basic necessities and gifts from Santa is very fulfilling for everyone involved. WAVE team student Kemri Madden said, “I think the true meaning of Christmas is about giving and not receiving the presents and giving out to the less fortunate and just being thankful for what you have.”
