There are many teacher-kid duos at WRMS, but what is it like to be a teacher’s kid? We are exploring the life of a teacher’s kid. It is different for them and sometimes it is the same. What challenges do they face, and how do they overcome them?
8th grader. Eli LaFontaine and his mom, 7th grade teacher, Mrs.Vandoren enjoy spending time together. Eli says his mom inspires him to work hard and be a better student. Vandoren said “I enjoy it, last year it was a lot of fun because I got to know his friends, they come in from the classroom, so that was fun, or come in sometimes during advisory to work. It’s been nice to be able to have car rides here together and back home, catching up on what’s going on at school. So it’s been fun, and I can give him a hard time sometimes. Teachers’ kids sometimes have reasons to dislike having their parents teach at WRMS, Elijah Lafontaine said, “She gets into my business too much at school”.
Sometimes being a teacher’s kid can have benefits, 8th grader, Reese Campbell said “I know a lot of teachers. Even though she has reasons for enjoying that her mom works at WRMS, there are always downsides, she said that her least favorite thing is, “Random people come up to me and ask me if my mom is Mrs. Campbell.” Mrs. Campbell agrees that going to the same school as her daughters is a blessing and not a curse. She said “Most parents don’t get to see their kids while they are at school. I love that I get a glimpse of what they are doing during the day. It’s fun to interact with them and their friends. It was also fun to be their coach during cross-country seasons the past 2 years”.
Even though being a teacher’s kid can be difficult, there can always be upsides. Some kids only get to see their parents before and after school, but some are very lucky to be able to spend more time with their parents. Eli and Reese both get to see their parents during the day because their parents work at the middle school.
