Eighth grade science teacher on the WAVE team Mrs. Louderback is teaching a new elective class called Environmental Science. Seventh graders now will be choosing their electives. There will also be an Agriculture Science elective class for Eighth graders, so there will be two elective classes One for seventh grade which will be Environmental Science, One for Eighth Grade Agriculture Science. The eighth grade elective class will be an advanced science class that students can also take in high school.
Louderback, said, “I have noticed over the last three years, there were a number of students who had a general interest in agriculture and environmental science. There are many career pathways and experiences connected with the topics. It seemed like it would be a great opportunity to provide for students to explore and learn more about.” Louderback said the new seventh grade class will focus on learning about the environment and how we can sustain it. ”Environmental science will be a seventh grade elective that will explore the relationship between organisms and the environment, human impact on the environment, and sustainability practices on the environment and natural resources”.
Head Principal, Mr. Haire, said adding opportunities for middle school students to grow in their learning and have choices for interest is crucial in a middle school. “As we continue to provide opportunities for students to be college and career ready, it’s a great opportunity to open up exposure to students to environmental science. This program will help students understand the environment, develop critical thinking skills, etc.” he said.
Head Principal, Mr. Haire, said some of the science teachers will split time between the two middle schools to teach the new classes. “These teachers will serve both WRNMS and WRMS.” A lot of changes will be made for the science classrooms. “The rooms in the back of the eighth grade pod are being renovated this summer into two programs, environmental science and outdoor education. Particularly, these two rooms will be in what’s currently Mrs. Louderback, Ms. Turner, and Weese/Salvatore Rooms. The rooms will have a total gut job and be brand new for the new program,” Haire said.
Seventh grader, Brennan Miller, on the All Stars team says he is interested in taking the new environmental science elective class next year. “I’m interested in how everything works and the different things they do in science. Science is my favorite subject because it’s cool learning how to do new things and all the experiments they do.”
