“A coach is someone who sees beyond your limits and guides you to greatness.” This quote from Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, shows how important the impact of a coach can be. Not only do coaches have an impact at the professional level, but their influence can begin even right here in middle school, where we have many teachers who choose to coach sports in their free time.
Coach Carson, PE teacher, starting coaching at a young age, and has continued to coach as a teacher. “I started coaching when I was in high school. I gave pitching lessons to a neighbor and really enjoyed it. It grew to helping with more of her teammates, and kept growing from there. I gave pitching and hitting lessons through high school, college, and after graduating. I’ve since coached or helped with lots of travel and rec teams. When I began teaching at Jackson Heights, I added volleyball and basketball to my coaching duties, but softball is what I’ve done the longest.
Coaches play a vital role in students’ lives by guiding their personal growth, building confidence, and teaching valuable life skills through sports. Eighth grader Lucy Wittrock if a coach ever impacted the way she played, and she said, “Yes, during tennis practice, coach Garland helped me adjust my serve, which helped me in the long run.” This small adjustment not only improved her technique but also boosted her confidence during matches.
Eighth grader Quinton Naylor has also had a positive impact from coaches. We asked Naylor if a coach ever impacted they we he played, and he said “Yeah, Coach Cook, he has always been there for me and he’s just that guy. Then Coach Hawkins taught me a lot of things about being a defensive linemen.”
“A coach doesn’t just teach sports they help kids believe in themselves and grow stronger inside and out,” said Cameryn Dial.
Coaches can have a big impact on students by helping them improve, stay motivated, and feel supported. The interviews show that coaches at our school do more than just teach sports. They help students grow and feel more confidence.
