The 8th grade SWAT, HEAT, and WAVE teams at WRMS have recently started a fundraiser called Penny Wars, which will take place throughout the month of December. Students will be able to give coins or dollars, and the money will be donated to people in need.
The rules of Penny Wars are that students can bring coins or dollars to put in their advisory teacher’s jars or other core classes. The change makes your score count go up, while dollars make their score go down. One penny is worth +1 point and a dollar is worth -100 points. Since dollars decrease an advisories points, students can “sabotage” by putting bills in other advisories’ jars. All the money your team makes will be donated to a fundraiser of your teams choosing.
The teams encourage students and other teachers to join in on the donations, to help raise money for good causes. SWAT teacher, Mrs. Bruce, said the SWAT team is raising money for the Kansas Neurological Institute. She said, “We would like to raise at least $1000…This money is split between 8 men in a group home that we “adopt” at KNI.”
7th grade All Star teacher, Mrs. Estenson, said penny wars have always been a great way to raise money for charity. She said “we started penny wars long before any of the current All Stars teachers were on the team. It has always been something to fundraise for a charity of our choosing”. The All Stars plan to do penny wars later this school year.
8th grader, Garrett Kochi said he loves to donate and help people. He said, “So far I have donated $20 and I want to improve on that and donate some more to help the people that need it.”
Penny Wars will wrap up right before winter break. Bring your pennies and dollars to help a great cause.
